The Szalamandres, terrible and destructive, are hated and feared by the enemies of the Khthones to such a degree that mere word of their presence is enough to weaken both bladders and the determination of their owners. The wise general will thus protect these fire-spitting creatures as far as he possibly can, for each Szalamandra is both worth its weight in silver and the target of as much as the enemy can bring to bear: for a single gobbet of the fire contrived from a Szalamandra's throat is enough to scatter scores of men and beasts in blind panic. Once that fire takes hold it cannot be doused, and its victims perish as they scream in agony, cursing these brutal, unforgiving creatures for a death none would wish upon their worst foes.
