Garric's life is devoted to the lord Eormanræd: to his honour, to his renown, to his campaigns. Garric bears his banner, fights for him, commands for him, for he is a noble in his own right, and so brings his warriors to battle whenever his lord wishes it. Yet his devotion is to a deeper cause, to the cause his lord embraces, to the survival of his people and their lands. For are not the Jutes the first who dared to sail, the first to believe in their right to abide, the first to make peace in the new lands, even in the face of such enmity? To some, the Jutes are an abomination. To Garric, the Jutes are the guarantee of a way of life the followers of the nailed god could not even hope to understand.
