Baalor has always sought to subvert those creatures above the sea, the humans' beasts of burden and war, the monstrous denizens of the wastes and the wildernesses, but none have proved as ardent for him as Shaaroc. An ancient, colossal Cawrdraig - what the Fomor call Drackox - of the crags deep within Gwaelod, that wild and mountainous place the Romanii never conquered, Shaaroc saw the implacable advance of the tribes from the east as well as the incursions of the Érainn and the Ysians and the Norse from the coasts as proof of the weakness of the Brythoniaid. Their increasing dependence upon the dragons and their blind faith in the false power of the cross proved to be the lever that Baalor needed, for insidious thoughts planted in him by the servants of the Eye in the Ice served to turn Shaaroc's concern at the death of so many dragon-kin to anger and hatred at the betrayal of his kind by the sons of Cunedda. Promises, he saw clearly for the first time, were never kept, oaths were increasingly broken and pacts forgotten, until he could serve Cadfan ap Iago and the Brythoniaid no longer: he broke faith with them, along with others of his kind, and finally saw the world as Baalor knew it to be. Like the Fomor have understood for centuries, Shaaroc now understands that the blights of the world are caused by humans and humans alone, and their death or slavery is ultimately preferable to the death of the lands and the seas and the skies. It is thus that he carries his ancient weapon to battle, that he now drives his primeval, monstrous strength against the humans and their mindless beasts, and why he has become so reviled by those who once called him an ally and a friend.
